Abstract
What happens when you take a U. S. competence-based program to Kenya? We were challenged to consider the ways in which our context had limited our understanding of competence as primarily individual rather than communal; as primarily focused on reflecting and analyzing rather than doing and being; and as primarily demonstrated in academic papers rather than artifacts, audio, video, or live performance. In this workshop, small groups will work through cases based upon our experiences to explore both how competence assessment can translate to other contexts and how other contexts invite us to rethink our assumptions about competence assessment.
