Project Abstract
Prior research indicates that police officers and Black males undergo high stereotype threat during encounters with one another. Stereotype threat is tension that results when one fears confirming negative stereotypes about one's group. As part of this research, we examined whether stereotype threat is a factor during group encounters such as demonstrations. Thus, our research measured demonstrators during a demonstration to get a true analysis of their perceptions of law enforcement, demonstrations, and potential reactions from encountering police officers in actual situations that give rise to heightened emotional states. Our experiment analyzed three separate race-related demonstrations in Chicago in which we tested participants before and during the demonstration with a stereotype threat embedded survey.
