An Integrated Literature Review

Background: Complementary and alternative therapies can be integrated into treatment to help reduce the level of pain. However, there are limited studies to explore literature for studies to identify the modalities of CAM that have demonstrated efficiency on decreasing headache pain and influencing factors affecting the use of CAM for headache in adolescents.
Objectives: The objective was to determine what are the most commonly used modalities of CAM and what are the factors influencing adolescents to choose CAM use.
Method: An integrative literature review was used. A search of literature was done using CINAHL, PubMed, Up to Date and ProQuest. Multiple combinations of the following search terms were used: pediatric, children, headache, complimentary, alternative, treatments, holistic, adolescent, medicine, pain management, evidence-based practice, therapy, and migraine.
Results: The most common modalities of CAM use were biologically based therapies, manipulative or body-based therapies, and mind body therapies. The factors that influence an adolescent’s decision to use CAM therapy are older age ranged adolescents, higher socioeconomic class, having private insurance, and co-occurring chronic conditions.
Conclusion: This integrated literature review found that there are 3 main modalities of CAM most commonly used. It was also found that certain factors contribute to CAM use. Health providers can use this information to help reduce pain by making referrals and providing information on alternative treatment.
