Abstract
Background: Nurse image as perceived by society is outdated, inaccurate, and leads to the lack of interest in pursuing the profession. Contributing factors to this lack of interest in nursing could be explored by researching what resources are available to prospective nurses.
Objectives: The purpose of this literature review is to explore the implications that current overall nurse image (NI) has on the future of the nursing profession, by analyzing existing resources available to prospective nurses.
Methods: This integrative literature review utilized the matrix method by Judith Garrard to organize and synthesize the data. A data comparison of the data matrices was conducted and connections between the data were made.
Conclusion: The findings of this IRL present the misconceptions that still persist regarding nurse image (NI), due to traditional outdated stereotypes of nurses and lack of knowledge of professional nursing. The impact of NI was evaluated by exploring the quality of resources available to prospective nurses considering the profession, as this ultimately affects the future of nursing. Understanding the concept of NI can assist the nursing profession in working towards a more accurate and positive image. This study hopes to provide recommendations on how to build towards positive NI and a brighter future for the nursing profession.
