Abstract
The legalization of marijuana in many U.S. states, despite its federal illegality, has resulted in an influx of positive marijuana drug screens across the healthcare sector.1 To better understand this problem, CRNAs in the Illinois Association of Nurse Anesthetists (IANA) were surveyed regarding their perceived knowledge of their organization’s policies regarding cannabis use using an online survey. The survey had a response rate of approximately 8.2% (n=148) and a majority (70%) of CRNAs disagreed or were neutral when asked if their organization’s policies were well-communicated regarding cannabis use. These results make clear that CRNAs lack clarity and communication from employers regarding cannabis policies. To prevent positive drug screens and increase compliance with federal law, healthcare organizations should clearly communicate policies regarding cannabis use. To that end, the results of this project were put into an infographic that may persuade healthcare organizations to improve their communication of their policies.
