Abstract

This paper will discuss the work performed by students at Iowa State University in the creation of a camera system used to record the expected 2017 solar eclipse. This camera system uses a gimbal device made of 3 brushless gimbal motors to control the Raspberry Pi camera. A chipKIT and a Raspberry Pi will be used to keep the camera pointed at the solar eclipse autonomously. This system was designed to utilize a computer vision system as well as a photo resistor sensor array to determine that the camera is pointed at the solar eclipse. This paper will first discuss what work has currently been done on the system. Next we will discuss the tests that have been performed and its results. Finally we will discuss the future plan for preparing for the 2017 solar eclipse.
