Abstract
Excerpted from the authors’ Sainte Vincente de Paul Lui Meme, this article profiles each of Vincent de Paul’s tutors, their influence on him, and where Vincent departed from their ideas. Benedict of Canfeld taught that spiritual life consists only in doing God’s will, a precept Vincent adopted. Vincent credited Andre Duval with helping him discern God’s call to establish a community for giving missions to rural people. Francis de Sales made the distinction between affective love, the love one feels for God, and effective love, the love that lies in working for God. Vincent particularly stressed effective love as the guiding principle for his communities.
