Abstract

A portrait found in the Mazarin Library is compared to previously known images of Vincent de Paul. This pencil drawing by an unknown artist is in a volume from the end of the seventeenth century and predates the portrait or portraits which are the basis for most other engravings. It is also evaluated within the context of written descriptions of his appearance and temperament by those who knew him best.
