Project Abstract

The United States has reports that state nearly 75% of mental disorders begin before one is 24 years old (Stirling, Toumbourou, & Rowland, 2015). The Psychiatry Inpatient Unit at the Ann and Robert H. Lurie Children’s Hospital of Chicago, serves children and adolescents between the ages of 3 through 17 that experience a wide range of diagnoses. These diagnoses include: depression, bipolar disorder, psychosis, anxiety disorders, post-traumatic stress disorder, ADHD, developmental disorders, behavioral disorders, and combined medical and emotional or behavior disorders (Lurie Children’s Hospital, n.d). The most typical population that I work with at my internship is adolescents between the ages of 13 and 17 with a diagnosis of depression. Through my internship I have gained experience with group therapy, recreational therapy, and tutoring. My experience at my internship setting has prepared me for the field of human service after graduation.
