Abstract
Background: Local Anesthetic Systemic Toxicity (LAST) is a low-frequency, high-impact event which calls for the need to review due to potential knowledge decay among Certified Registered Nurse Anesthetists (CRNAs) and Nurse Anesthesia Trainees. Purpose: This study examined whether a choose-your-own-adventure (CYOA) video simulation improved CRNA and Nurse Anesthesia Trainee knowledge and confidence levels on the recognition and treatment of LAST. Method: This quantitative study utilized a pre- and post-test design with a CYOA video simulation portraying a LAST scenario. The sample population consisted of 31 CRNAs and Nurse Anesthesia Trainees throughout the United States. Results: The Wilcoxon signed-rank test revealed an increase in median knowledge scores from pre-test to post-test (p < 0.001). The Wilcoxon signed-rank test indicated increases in median confidence levels in both recognizing (p = 0.000298) and treating (p = 0.000216) LAST. Conclusion: The findings indicated that the CYOA video simulation was an effective tool, successfully enhancing both knowledge and confidence levels among CRNAs and Nurse Anesthesia Trainees regarding recognition and treatment of LAST.
