Abstract
Background: Mohs Micrographic surgery is the most effective treatment for non-melanoma skin cancers (NMSC) of the head and neck. Patient education is a critical component in preparing patients for Mohs surgery on the head and neck, Preventable postoperative complications from Mohs surgery can create adverse patient outcomes including provider mistrust and decreased likelihood of pursuing Mohs surgery in the future. There is limited documented evidence and no current guidelines for preoperative consultations for patients diagnosed with their first NMSC. Purpose: This study compares the occurrences of adverse postoperative complications between a preoperative in-person consultation to a telephone call in patients undergoing their first Mohs surgery. Theory: The theoretical framework utilized for this research project is the Health Belief Model. Methods: A retrospective chart review of 50 patients newly diagnosed with NMSC undergoing their first Mohs surgery was completed. Data collected included if the patient had an preoperative telephone call vs an in-person consultation, demographics, pertinent medical history, and occurrence of postoperative adverse outcomes within 4-6 weeks after surgery. Results: The results indicated no major difference in adverse postoperative outcomes between the two variables. Conclusion: Further research into the subject matter can be considered to improve outcomes. Keywords: Mohs, surgery, consultation, in-person, postoperative complications
