"The School for New Learning (SNL) is an interdisciplinary, competence-based liberal arts college for adults at DePaul University in Chicago. Founded in 1972, it was designed from the outset to explore alternative approaches to liberal education. . . . Inquiry pervades the school's liberal studies curriculum. SNL aims to transmit existing knowledge, of course, and the curriculum is shaped by the extant research base of the disciplines. But it is approached in ways that call upon students to discover things for themselves, to identify sources of relevant knowledge, and to put them to use."
