Description

"District Six: A Memory," approximately 11' x 16', 2008

I created "District Six: A Memory" soon after I returned from a 1997 art research trip to South Africa. I reprised this installation for my 70th birthday solo show at the South of Market Cultural Center in San Francisco. "District Six" addressed the deconstruction of a multicultural neighborhood in Cape Town, South Africa, during apartheid. The white government decided to tear down the diverse neighborhood to make a place for "whites only."
