Misericordia Home, Heart of Mercy

Project Abstract

Misericordia Home Heart of Mercy is a non-profit organization that has been in operation since 1921, by the Sisters of Mercy and under the Catholic Archdiocese of Chicago. Through the support of affiliated groups, legislators, volunteers, and private fundraising, Misericordia is able to provide its services to those in need. Located in Rodgers Park, is a 31-acre campus with residential homes and a variety of programs that aim to maximize independence and potential in every individual. Misericordia cares for more than 600 children and adults with mild to profound developmental disabilities, many of whom are also physically challenged. Residents at Misericordia come from diverse racial, religious, and socio-economic backgrounds, creating an environment fostering spirituality, dignity, respect and an enhanced quality of life. Misericordia’s programs are focused on job and independent living skills while integrating unique interests to create a personalized schedule for each resident. Self-help workshops, educational opportunities, social/recreational activities, fitness/physical therapy, and psychological support are all services provided by this organization. The mission of Misericordia is to support individuals with developmental disabilities in maximizing their level of independence and self-determination and promoting the development of natural family and community support, community awareness, education, and advocacy.
