Description

Discards & Variances is a large scale mixed media installation, March 5, 2011- June 15, 2011 at Yerba Buena Center for the Arts.

Cynthia Tom displays little pillows of "A Chinese Slave Girl" photos and those of her mother, grandmother and father, all of whom were victims of human trafficking in the 20's and 30's. She mixes these sad objects with the Spirit Boats of Jennifer Ewing and the paintings of Cris Matos to bring a hopeful wish for the spirits of women and children, past and present who have been victims of trafficking.

Cynthia's social justice art work gives a voice to women and children whose lives were not their own. Creates conversations where there have been none and directs attention to the current issues today.
