Abstract

Abstract

Background: The number of people being diagnosed with a chronic disease is on the rise. Living with a chronic disease impacts a person’s physical, mental, emotional, financial, and social aspects of the person’s life as well. A child diagnosed with a chronic disease is even more affected by the disease due to the lack of understanding of the disease. Alternative therapies to medication and procedures are explored as a way to help children cope with the symptoms and side effects of their disease.

Objectives: The purpose of this integrated literature review is to determine the effectiveness of Complementary and Alternative Medicine (CAM) on chronic disease in the pediatric population. Existing research on CAM will be reviewed to determine how CAM effects the treatment of chronic diseases.

Methods: The data and information found during this literature review has been organized using the matrix method. Specific inclusion and exclusion criteria have been put into place in order to determine which articles pertain the best to this literature review.

Conclusion: This integrated literature review came to the conclusion that while some types of Complementary and Alternative Medicine have been found effective in the treatment of certain pediatric chronic diseases, more research with larger population sizes are needed to grasp a better understanding of the benefits of these type of therapies.
