Description

This map shows the ratification of the 19th Amendment by year in the United States of America. This amendment, which was introduced to Congress in 1878, approved and submitted for ratification by the states in 1919, and then ratified by the necessary number of states in 1920, guarantees that “the right of citizens of the United States to vote shall not denied or abridged by the United States or by any State on account of sex.” This map was created by Aidan Schenkus for a project supervised by Prof. Euan Hague in the Department of Geography. Aidan increases the concentration of a repeated symbol, which in the case of this map is small circles, to provide a visualization of the years in which each state ratified the Amendment. The map also appears in Edward H. Sebesta’s book, “Pernicious: The Neo-Confederate Campaign against Social Justice in America.”
