Volume 2, Number 1 (1997)
A special focus on the 1966 Division Street Riot, one of many urban riots exploding across the national landscape that alerted to practices of police brutality, political repression, and economic exploitation to which Chicago Puerto Ricans were subjected to during a time of intense community mobilization for equality and social justice. Articles, eyewitness interviews and excerpts from Félix Padilla’s Puerto Rican Chicago (1987) chronicle and preserve the oral histories of events of the summer of 1966. Other topics include an engaging article on the debate over the intentions and effects of the anti-immigrant campaign as manifested through the U.S. English movement, and an essay on the status of Latinas in Chicago and their efforts to build safer, healthier, and more prosperous communities.Articles
