Volume 11, Number 1 (2008)
Volume 11 highlights the continuing struggle for human rights and social justice in nations of the Americas, through factors such as the exploitation of Haitian migrant workers in the Dominican Republic, the mistreatment of Central American migrants by the Mexican army, violence and prejudice faced by migrants at the U.S.-Mexican border, acts of violence terrorism in Colombia, and secessionist challenges in Bolivia; for the U.S., injustices center on xenophobia, workplace discrimination, exploitation, healthcare and fair wage inequalities, issues of citizenship and protection under the law. Articles discuss the rebirth of the Latin American Left, notions of fear about a “brown society” in the Midwest, federal financing of civic organizations, and the focus on national security and immigration politics by local law enforcement agencies, with attention to the 2006-2008 immigration marches in Chicago. The legacy of the Young Lords and anti-racist struggles on a university campus are discussed in terms of building bridges, not borders, through cultural-artistic projects, and a photo-essay relates African presence in the Mexican states of Oaxaca and Guerrero.Articles
